23.01.2012 Sami culture - FINLAND

Sámi culture is celebrated with a miniature sheet, shaped after the floor plan of the Sámi Cultural Centre SAJOS. SAJOS is a center for the Finnish Sámi administration and culture where events, congresses and meetings can be organized. 
The Sámi Culture sheet was illustrated by Sámi artist Merja Aletta Ranttila. The self-adhesive stamps are shaped like mountains. The troll-drum-patterned sheet illustrates the three daughters of the Sámi Mother Doddess, a reindeer village and lean-tos.

23.01.2012 Helene Schjerfbeck - 150 years - FINLAND

The famous Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) was born 150 years ago. The booklet of four first class stamps is issued in honor of this jubilee. Three stamps depict paintings and one a lithograph.


Helene Schjerfbeck was born in Helsinki on 10 July 1862. At the age of eleven she enrolled in the Finnish Art Society's drawing school. She studied in Paris during the 1880s, developing from historical painting to Naturalism, and later to Symbolism. In 1902, she returned to Finland and lived in relative isolation until 1917, when an art dealer exhibited her work in his private gallery. In 1925, she moved to Tammisaari. In 1944, she flew to a spa hotel near Stockholm, remaining there until her death in 1946.
